Hogwarts's Questions

The Ministry of Magic detects underage sorcery and unforgivable curses at any place where the ministry's right resides. Cruciatus, Avada Kedavra and Imperius are examples of unforgivable curses, any one caught casting them earns one free ticket to Azkabban. The situation is, Draco Malfoy Casted an imperius curse upon Madame Rosmerta at Hogsmeade that is why she was the one who gave the cursed necklace to Katie Bell and gave the poison mead to Prof. Sloghorn. The question is, why does the Ministry of Magic have not acted upon the situation? Did they detect the cursed casting or just ignored the situation? or is this an another prof that the Ministry was being infiltrated by the Death Eaters?

Founders of Hogwarts

"You all know, of course, that Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago - the precise date is uncertain - by the four greatest witches and wizards of the age. They built this castle together, far from prying Muggle eyes, for it was an age when magic was feared by common people, and witches and wizards suffered much persecution." -- Professor Binns (CS)

Over a thousand years ago, the four greatest witches and wizards of the age shared a dream, to create a school where young people of the wizarding world could study and be trained in the magical arts they needed to become skilled, fully-trained wizards. These four great wizards each founded one of the Houses of the school that they worked together to form: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. They have been referred to as 'The Hogwarts Four.'

For a number of years, this arrangement worked just fine. Each of the founders took a group of students to be in their own house and even though they had differences of opinion about who should be trained, the house system helped them all to work together. However, as the years went by, the differences between Gryffindor and Slytherin became a serious rift. Eventually Slytherin left the school.



Godric Gryffindor believed that anyone who showed magical ability should be allowed to attend Hogwarts.

Appearance: Based upon the image by Lightmaker from JKR's website (shown here), he has mane-like red hair, green eyes, and a powerful build. Canon, or artistic license? Only Jo (and Lightmaker) know for sure.

Home: According to the Sorting Hat, Gryffindor came "from wild moor." Bathilda Bagshot's A History of Magic is a little more specific: Gryffindor was born in the West Country village of Godric's Hollow, named for Godric himself (DH16).

Skills: According to JKR, "Godric Gryffindor was the most accomplished dueller of his time, an enlightened fighter against Muggle-discrimination."

Artifacts: The Sorting Hat originally belonged to Gryffindor. His goblin-made sword, with rubies in the handle, has also survived and was, at various times, in the possession of Dumbledore, Harry, Ron and Neville. The sword was not stolen, though the goblins feel othervise (BLC).

Device: Lion.

Colors: Red and gold.



Helga Hufflepuff

Appearance: Based upon the image by Lightmaker from JKR's website (shown here), Hufflepuff has gingery red hair, blue eyes, and a plump figure. Canon, or artistic license? Only Jo (and Lightmaker) know for sure.
Home: According to the Sorting Hat, Hufflepuff came "from valley broad," which Lexicon reader Ian tells us probably indicates Wales.

Skills: According to JKR's website, Hufflepuff was particularly famous for her dexterity at food-related Charms. Many recipes traditionally served at Hogwarts feasts originated with Hufflepuff (JKR). Her Famous Wizard card states that "[s]he brought people from different walks of life together to help build Hogwarts and was loved for her charming ways." (fw12). Another accomplishment of Hufflepuff's was her concern for the treatment of House-elves in the Wizarding world. She made Hogwarts a refuge for them, and as a result they were treated more kindly there than elsewhere (PC122, PC130).

Artifacts: A small, magical golden cup with two finely wrought handles, engraved with a badger (HBP20, HBP26).

Device: Badger.

Colors: Yellow and black.



Rowena Ravenclaw

Appearance: "Fair Ravenclaw, from glen," (GF12). The word "fair" can refer to overall attractiveness (as in "Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all" in Snow White) as well as paleness of skin color or hair. Although neither one is canon, both the image by Lightmaker from Jo's website (see left) and the one on the original Famous Wizard card (Electronic Arts ™) show Ravenclaw with long dark hair and brown eyes.

Home: According to the Sorting Hat..."Ravenclaw came "from glen," which, according to Lexicon reader Ian, probably means somewhere in Scotland, such as Glencoe or the Great Glen where Loch Ness is.

Family: A daughter named Helena, now known as The Grey Lady, the ghost of Ravenclaw House at Hogwarts (DH31).

Skills: Her Famous Wizard card tells us that "[i]t's thought that she came up with the ever-changing floor plan. She's best remembered for her intelligence and creativity."

Artifacts: Diadem (tiara) inscribed "Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure" which bestows wisdom when worn. Stolen by her daughter Helena, who ran away to Albania and hid the diadem in a tree. It was later found by Tom Riddle who made a Horcrux with it and hid it in the room of Requirement. The diadem was destroyed by Fiendfyre (DH31) (see Horcruxes page for more information).

Device: Eagle.

Colors: Blue and bronze.

According to Jo's website, Ravenclaw was "the most brilliant witch of her time," who, according to legend, died of a broken heart (cause unknown) (JKR).

She is said to have stated: "We will teach those whose intelligence is surest." (OP11) (fw16) Rowena was dear friends with Helga Hufflepuff.


Salazar Slytherine

Appearance: In CS17, the statue of Slytherin was described as being "ancient and monkey-like."
Based upon the image by Lightmaker from JKR's website (shown here), Slytherin is gaunt with a long grey beard and pale grey eyes. Canon, or artistic license? Only Jo (and Lightmaker) know for sure.

Home: According to the Sorting Hat, Slytherin came from the fen. In the UK, fens are located in the eastern portion of England, East Anglia and in particular Norfolk which is North East of London.

Skills: Slytherin was one of the first recorded Parselmouths and an accomplished Legilimens (JKR).

Artifacts: A heavy gold locket carrying Salazar Slytherin's mark (an ornate serpentine "S"). The locket was inherited by Merope Gaunt Riddle, pawned during her pregnancy to Borgin and Burkes, purchased by Hepzibah Smith, and subsequently stolen by Tom Riddle upon Smith's murder (HBP20).

Possibly also a clumsily-made gold ring with the Peverell coat-of-arms carved into the black stone (HBP4, HBP10, HBP17, HBP23) (see Horcruxes page for more information).

Device: Snake.

Colors: Green and silver.

Salazar Slytherin believed that only pure-blood witches and wizards should be allowed to attend Hogwarts. He got into an argument with Godric Gryffindor about this and eventually left the school. There was a legend that Slytherin built a secret chamber somewhere in Hogwarts that only his true heir would be able to open. This chamber, called the Chamber of Secrets, contained a monster that would finish his "noble purpose" of killing all the Muggle-born students at Hogwarts. As Slytherin's heir, Tom Riddle did open the Chamber and released the monster, a basilisk. Harry Potter defeated the basilisk with the help of Fawkes the phoenix and the sword of Gryffindor (CS).

Harry Potter has many qualities Salazar Slytherin prized in his hand-picked students: Parselmouth -- resourcefulness -- determination -- a certain disregard for rules.

Watson Stalked by Harvard Student

'Harry Potter' star Emma Watson, who is a student at the Brown university in US, was reportedly left "quite shaken" after students from Harvard university stalked her during a football match.

The actress, who shot to fame playing Hermione Granger in the fantasy series, was targeted by Harvard's student magazine 'The Voice'.

Watson, 19, was at a game between the two schools recently, but security guards had to surround her to protect her from harassment, New York Post reported.

The students also posted comments on Twitter saying, "We will be Live-Tweetin' the game and possibly stalking Emma Watson, so keep your eyes peeled for that, too!"

"In enemy territory. Lookin for a certain witch, and, WATSON FOUND. I repeat WATSON FOUND. (sic)," the posting further read.

The magazine also posted a photo of the star on the micro-blogging website and branded the stalking campaign a "success".

But after getting complaints, the editor attached a note to the picture, saying, "There seems to be much ado about nothing over this photo and liveblog. Understand that these live tweets were made to be intentionally outrageous and overblown."

We Hated Hogwarts Uniform

Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson hated their onscreen school uniform and want the franchise bosses to burn them after they finish shooting the final movie.

The stars, who play the students of magic school Hogwarts in the movie are happy to get rid of the uniforms once the shooting is over.

Watson, the nerdy Hermione Granger in the movie, said, "I was like, 'Burn it!' Oh, my God, to be done with those shoes and that uniform."

Actor Daniel Radcliffe is also happy to ditch his Hogwarts school uniform. "When you're 18, one of the worst things to be wearing while trying to chat up a girl on the set is a school uniform. You look like a kid. You're not going to score dressed like that," Radcliffe told Entertainment Weekly.

However, co-star Rupert Grint admitted that he had stolen one of his red ties that he gets to wear in the film. The Harry Potter movies are based on highly successful fantasy novels written by British author JK Rowling.

The story revolves around the adventures of adolescent wizard Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, his friends from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

They are currently shooting the last film of the franchise 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows".

Harmony of Differences

Hogwarts is more than a wizarding institution who perseveres to produce a quality and a good witch and wizard of the world but a place where friendship and adventure resides.

Harry, Ron and Hermione developed affection towards each other despite the differences they have. Harry was able to develop an urge of revenge towards his family’s murderer which was happens to be the most dangerous wizard of all time. He was always angry and impatient and he even cannot sometimes manage his temper, however advised by Prof. Dumbledore to refrain this feeling Harry was able controlled the wound to perhaps healed a bit. When it comes to the family Harry is quite sensitive he has the determination and even has the power of leadership towards his teammates in Quidditch.

Ron otherwise is quite like his twin brothers George and Fred which find bullying a fun type of game to play with, but maybe because of his friends presence this manner is quietly being reduce. Ron is a bit of a coward toward object of horror and is easily being terrified with spiders. Hermione is the bookish girlfriend of the two. She knew everything and has always an explanation to every question you may want to raise. She will read the whole book without being asked and she can performed and can learned magic as fast as she could compared to other student who are pure-blooded witch and wizards and despite of being a muggleborn.

See! They harmonize to each other even how poles apart they are. Because it is the differences that make them appreciate their friends’ uniqueness.

This is quite similar to my recent experience, the Indak-Indakan competition is compost of the entire CIT students from 1^st year to the graduating. Imagine this whole community of individual with different view of life, different ways of appreciation towards patients and a variety of personality and unique attitude and will be harmonized into one stride of steps to create and magic of choreography. Their will be a certain events that ideas will clash because of these aggregating spirits. But perhaps patient is a virtue which holds everyone to respect each others anger and causes the chaos not to exist.

September 27, 2009 is the day whom everyone finds the joy in the company of all. The issues of gap and respect had entirely relinquished by merry making, dance and laughter’s of joy. All of the sudden friendships were restored and new friends need to leave and find it quite sad to imagine that they need to depart. We may never taken the beacon home but I believe that victory is not win by prize but win by heart, the experience is rewarding and it’s the people you meet is the trophy.

I may leave the portal of my alma matter pack with skills and knowledge and overflowing of experience and stories waiting for my mouth to share that differences can be harmonized and can make tales of forever.
